Paper and pens at the ready our first lesson was spent planning our ideas for our appliqués. We learned that it was important to think of simple shapes that could be easily transferred onto fabric. We watched a demonstration of how to use bonda web to help us apply the fabric and get a really crisp edge to the shapes. We then practised this by applying a heart to a square of fabric and then using various hand stitches to embellish our design. Threading the needle takes time and patience!

Sewsanna had cut out the bags for us but this week was really focused on applying the fabric and adding our hand stitching to the designs. Bonda web is great to use as it is sticky on both sides but we had to first fix the bonda web to the paper with the traced design on and then cut it out so we could get crisp edges. You then remove the backing paper and apply the appliqué motif to the main fabric. We then spent the rest of the session embellishing our designs with hand stitching.Everyone was very focused this week and we achieved some lovely results with neat even stitching.

The designs we chose were: Rosie-Black and White Panda, With extra big ears, Clara- Pink Spotty Elephant with a plated tale and a flappy ear, Erin-Spotty Shampoodel (with bubbles), Tabitha-Orange spotty dog also with a flappy ears, Lucy-Cupcake and Isla with her Spotty mouse again with flappy ears.

This was the scene Sewsanna created of the 6 love hearts we made. First we were given a piece of square material, some chequered fabric and some Bonda web. the next step was to iron the Bonda web to the back of the love hearts peel of the back of the Bonda web and the re iron the the love hearts to the material. Then we sewed different patterns and stitches to are creations for mothers day or valentines.

This is when we marked out were we needed to sew on the machine. This stage was just before we turned the bag outside in, and pushed in the water-proof material to almost finish our bags We then had to make a channel for the ribbon.

Our bags were linied with a waterproof plastic lining this was tricky to sew and we had to be very careful with the iron. We also made a channel for the draw string at the top.

We use a special tool called a bodkin to thread the ribbon through. All done here are our designs.

They look fantastic well done everyone! You all look sew proud..
